Computer Graphics 2-4 Goals and Expectations
Level 2 will work more independently and explore technical and design concepts learned in previous computer graphics classes with a focus on authentic design problems that could be encountered in the real world AND explore areas of computer graphics that interest you. You will mostly be following set objectives, with the opportunity for 1 or 2 choice projects.
Level 3 & 4 will continue to work more independently building off skills acquired from level 2. They will create a final Computer Graphics Portfolio that would be suitable for college submission. They may write their own objectives or get inspiration from the project list ideas below. See asticked Term 3 & 4 projects that are required for level 3.
All levels are required to create a final portfolio at the end of the semester that they will present on a Google Slide show which will consist of and include the following:
-- 6-8 major projects
-- Focus on composition and the thoughtful application of the design principles,
-- Show a variety of techniques, subjects and concepts,
-- Demonstrate creativity and originality, NO DIRECT COPIES
-- Focus on the mastery of the ADOBE programs and use of technical skills within the programs.
Other expectations:
> Students must submit sketch for teacher approval before beginning, and submit a Project Plan sheet for any choice projects—OR IT WILL NOT BE GRADED!!>
> Students will also be expected to post jpegs of all final artwork to the LHS Computer Graphics Flickr Group site with an artists’ statement explaining the concept of your artwork and techniques explored. You will also be required to critique and comment on a minimum of 2 pieces of art by your classmates each term.
> Students will be expected to complete a written Evaluation for each project applying the 4 steps of the art criticism process of DESCRIPTION, ANALYSIS,
INTERPRETATION, and JUDGMENT.
> A Folder and sketch book must be maintained and submitted with project plans documenting project ideas, reference material and sketches. This will be evaluated
throughout the semester.
Term 3 Project List (subject to change):
1) Persuasive Flyer or Poster Design: To advertise and persuade students to sign up for computer graphics classes next year..
2) Commentary Collage in Photoshop--experiment with a variety of selection and collage techniques
3) *Poster Design for Spring Musical
4) Choice Illustrator Project that combines 2 existing images into a new composition OR work from an original sketch. Must apply the gradient Mesh
technique.
5) Choice project or participate in a CONTEST
Term 4 Project List (subject to change):
6) Self Portrait Digital Painting
7) Part Theme Variation Project. To help students to think conceptually. Students will interpret and render one object 9 ways exploring different programs, mediums, styles, concepts and techniques. Students can combine traditional medium with computer medium for this project.
8) Logo design & Web banner graphic Students will research a business of choice and create an original logo. You will also create an animated web graphic using Photoshop
9 Create a parody of a famous artwork using your choice of programs. Research the artist before you begin.
10) Choice project-- see the list below or write your own objectives.
Other Project Ideas.
1) Pick a person (yourself, a friend or someone else) and use words that describe that person to create a portrait using only typography, see the tutorials under resources
2) Create art for any contests that are available with teacher approval
3) Complete any Tutorial on back then apply what you learn to create an original piece of art.
4) Create an animated web banner advertisement using Photoshop: Advertise a school club or sport or any business! See tutorial on other side to get started, size 800 x 400 pixels.
5) Original Character Concept art: Create an original character using digital painting techniques in Photoshop. Include different poses and expressions.
6) Original Poster Design: Set up 11 x 17 and work in your choice of project. Design a poster to advertise your favorite band, movie or TV show. Must include type and have strong visual Impact.
7) Create a visual pun using any program that is creative and original--see teacher for handout
8) Illustrated Text. Take a body of text (poem, song or word) and illustrate it using Photoshop CS3. Include the text as part of your composition. Apply advanced layer techniques in Photoshop. Complete lesson 11. Must be unified and visually balanced.
9) Magazine Advertisement with Strong Visual Impact. Create an original magazine advertisement to promote your choice of product or service that would appeal to a teenager. This advertisement must have strong visual impact (contrast of size, color or use the unexpected) to get the readers attention. It must also have a strong focal point. You may use your choice of programs, but final art and all type must be set up in Adobe Illustrator. Photoshop images must be placed as TIF file. You must also include a catch slogan or headline which ties in with your concept or visual. Project plan and sketch must be completed before you begin.
10) Create a surrealism style montage using Photoshop. This style emphasized art in which dreams, fantasy and the subconscious served as inspiration for artists. Include images that are combined in unrealistic combinations. Look at the work by Salvadore Dali for inspiration. (Look up on Internet) Your images should revolve around a concept (idea) or tell a story. Try smudging and distorting images set up on layers. Change the colors. Experiment with the different filters. Create a visually balanced and unified composition.
11) Explore Flash animation software and create a short animated clip on topic of choice. Be prepared to present to the class.
12) Design an original CD cover and inside cover for your favorite band. Unify them so they go together. Add type creatively. Use photoshop images, but final must be set up in InDesign or Illustrator.
13) Do a choice original digital painting using Photoshop. Focus on the principles of rhythm and movement. Use your own photo or alter an existing photo. NO DIRECT COPIES
14) Create a Self Portrait that tells your audience something about you without showing your face. Use your choice of programs.
15) Create a digital alien using Photoshopr. Combine at least 4 animal or human parts realistically to create a new species that is out of this world. Put it in a creative background. Experiment with the liquefy filter too.
16) Design a cover for your favorite magazine or make up a new magazine. Include images from Photoshop and create an original mask head (name) using Illustrator. Final art to be created in Illustrator
17) Create an original comic book hero and create a comic book cover with title and other pertinent text. Create in Illustrator. Start with a sketch and scan into computer to use as a template.
